Biography:
Mary Midgett is a retired school teacher, author of New York Flavor with a San Francisco Beat, and presenter of Parenting and Relationship workshops. Midgett focuses on maintaining communication and honesty in relationships as well as the importance of communication in the work place. “Much of our anger stems from our lack of communication,” Midgett reports. Midgett discusses how to ask for what we want from our relationships in our daily lives during our interactions with our peers and children.

Midgett is an inspirational speaker and educator specializing in issues of intimacy and parenting. She spotlights the importance in articulating feelings as well as the ways through which complex feelings may be channeled safely.

Midgetts’ professional background spans nationally and her workshops include “Human Sexuality” presented at the Gay and Lesbian Conference/Forum in Los Angles, workshops on Parenting presented in San Francisco to Urban University, Goodwill Industries, Hamilton Home for Parents, Elizabeth Fry Center (an alternative to incarceration for mothers with infants), Florence Critterton (for pregnant teens), Larkin Street (for troubled youth), and Progress Foundation (an alternative mental health foundation) and Midgett presented at a Lesbian conference in Atlanta on Human Sexuality.

Midgett retired after 34 years of teaching in New York City and San Francisco school districts. Midgett’s counseling experiences are in the following facilities, Florence Critterton and St Mary’s teen programs, and Elizabeth Fry Center. Midgett is a relief counselor for Progress Foundation that is a non-profit which provides residential and day treatment services for mental health clients who range in age from 18 to 90 years of age.

Midgett began her speaking career through the Human Rights Commission at San Francisco State University in the Human Sexuality department in 1983, followed by Alameda College, Santa Clara University, San Francisco Police Academy and numerous Bay Area middle and high schools. She led workshops at the annual Gay and Lesbian Leadership Forum and Health Institute in Los Angeles and in Atlanta and Old Lesbian Organizing for Change (OLOC) gatherings in Houston and Los Angeles.

Midgett lectured on Human Sexuality at San Francisco State University from 1983 until 2005. Midgett was also keynote speaker at an HIV Conference in Denver. While not an HIV victim, Midgett addressed “How to Love Yourself Being Positive.

Midgetts professional background spans from preschool and elementary teaching to consulting on issues of parents, relationship, and self esteem. Midgett holds a certificate from New School of Social Research in New York City and a BA Academy degree from Antioch University San Francisco. She has further her studied at the Psychoanalytical Institute of San Francisco and woman’s initiative San Francisco.

Midgett writes an inspirational column “Midgett’s Corner” for the Western Addition newspaper in San Francisco. The paper can be viewed online, www.westernedition.com. Midgett prefers to be called “Midgett”.
