Biography:
An original founder of The Cochran
Firm; of the late, famed attorney Johnnie L.
Cochran, Jr., Jock Smith upholds Johnnie's legacy
as the Firm's National President. Just recently,
Smith was named by Lawdragon to the publication's
Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiffs' Lawyers
in America.
A
Senior Partner at the Firm, Jock Smith has obtained
numerous record setting verdicts and settlements
including an $80 million verdict and a $1.6
billion verdict, the largest verdict in America
for the year 2004, as well as the top verdict
in the history of the nation by an African American
lawyer as lead counsel.
"I
am devoted to my work and my profession. It
is not only wonderful to be recognized by my
peers and colleagues, it is also outstanding
to be honored by such a significant legal publication,"
offers Smith.
"I am pleased by the fact that his legacy
continues through my work, and through the work
of all Cochran Firm attorneys around the nation.
Our accomplishments are still Johnnie's,"
Smith continues.
The
Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiffs' Lawyers in
America is the first publication to offer a
comprehensive look at those lawyers who represent
the little guy in cases ranging from medical
malpractice to securities class actions, often
with multi-million dollar results. It is comprised
of lawyers from a wide range of practices, ranging
from employment discrimination to toxic torts,
aviation disasters to birth negligence. Those
named to the list represent less than one-half
of one percent of the legal profession, placing
them among the most elite group of legal professionals.
More
than 10,000 attorneys were nominated for the
list by their peers and the Lawdragon editorial
staff, who selected nearly 1,600 finalists,
featured as members of the "Lawdragon 3000"
at Lawdragon.com. The Lawdragon 500 was selected
from that group, to determine the best lawyers
nationwide. Among the factors utilized in the
list's selection are extensive research by a
staff of award-winning journalists who interview
thousands of lawyers nationwide and a survey
of lawyers and clients who nominate and vote
for their peers online.
"The
Lawdragon rankings are intended to inform the
public of the nation's top legal professionals
who help those in need. We are enormously proud
of the 500 lawyers that we are honoring this
year as the best in the country," said
Katrina Dewey, CEO of Lawdragon.
Born
in New York City, New York, Jock began his law
practice in 1977. He was inducted into the Million
Dollar Advocates Forum and served as the nation's
first African American Trial Trustee for the
Alabama Trial Lawyers Association. Jock was
inducted as the first African American onto
the President's Advisory Council of the National
Wildlife Federation and the Martindale-Hubbell
Law Directory has given Jock an AV rating, the
highest achievable rating given to an attorney.
Jock
Smith co-authored his autobiography, Climbing
Jacob's Ladder: A Trial Lawyer's Journey on
Behalf of 'the Least of These' and is a
main speaker at different engagements across
the United States.
