Biography:
Demitri Conte Kornegay is currently
a lieutenant and a 25 year veteran with the
Montgomery County Police Department in Montgomery
County, Maryland.
His
previous book, Dear Rhonda - Life Lessons
From A Father to His Daughter, containing
fatherly guidance in the form of letters to
all those young women searching for a replacement
for their missing fathers in all the wrong places,
was so well received he was invited to appear
on such television and radio broadcasts as "Good
Morning America, The View, The Bev Smith Show,
Fox Morning News, The Bernie McCain Show, The
Donnie Simpson Show, and The Tavis Smiley Show."
His
latest book, Man Up! – No Excuses,
Do the Work, reaches out to the young man
that feel left out, extends a counseling pathway
to fathers in search of an opening to their
sons and reassures those adolescents that believe
they’ve been forgotten, God has a plan
for them and they count too.
He
has conducted workshops at Fatherhood Conferences
on the importance of fatherhood; forums at the
African American Male Empowerment Summit about
stepping up to manhood, African American Women
On Tour regarding father-daughter relationships,
and Blacks In Government (BIG) on preparing
the family for life in the 21st Century. He
has been a Visiting Scholar at Hampton University,
in Hampton Virginia, Clark Atlanta University,
in Atlanta, Georgia and Washington College in
Maryland.
This native Washingtonian was an All-American
football player in high school, attended the
University of Richmond, Virginia, on a football
scholarship and graduated with majors in Speech
Communications, Theater Arts, and a minor in
Sociology. While in Richmond, he tutored juvenile
offenders at the Virginia Penitentiary. Currently,
he is a graduate student majoring in Counseling
Psychology at Bowie State University, one of
the leading educational institutions for that
field.
Demitri
has also volunteered his time and services to
the Washington Urban League as a tutor at Whittier
Elementary school in their "Operation Rescue"
program and is currently a lunchtime mentor
in the Public School system. He is currently
a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
As
a Deacon at Galilee Baptist Church in Suitland,
Maryland, in 1992, he developed an award-winning
12-week, Rites of Passage program for young
men called "Men Under Construction."
The program, which has been running for 15 years,
teaches table manners, public speaking, decision
making, setting a personal budget, selecting
a career, choosing the "right" woman
and much more, to young men aged 14 and above.
Demitri’s passion has launched discussions
to start these classes in Detroit, Baltimore,
Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Houston.
Demitri is the recipient of the J. Franklin
Bourne Association's prestigious, "Award
for Community Service," and has recently
been nominated by his Pastors as the “Religious
Leader of the Year for Gamma Pi Chapter of Omega
Psi Phi. His is a gifted motivational speaker,
and is well known for his thought provoking,
energetic workshops and speeches delivered throughout
the country.
In
Brandywine, Maryland, he's known as "Coach
Deacon" at Gwynn Park Senior High School.
He coaches the running backs there. Demitri
is married to the former Angela Nichols of Baltimore,
Maryland, has one daughter, 25 year old Rhonda
Michelle, and about 700 sons.
