Biography:
Demitri C. Kornegay, is currently a
lieutenant and a 25 year veteran with the Montgomery
County Police Department in Montgomery County,
Maryland.
This
author of the books, "From Servitude to
Self-Reliance, The Kornegay Chronicles,"
and "Dear Rhonda-Life Lessons From A Father
to His Daughter,” has appeared on such
television and radio broadcasts as "Good
Morning America, The View, Fox Morning News,
The Bernie McCain Show, The Donnie Simpson Show,
and The Tavis Smiley Show." His most recent
national television appearance was the “Fatherhood
and Responsibility” episode of TV One’s,
“Black Men Revealed.” He is also
featured in the NAACP’s latest “CRISIS”
magazine and an upcoming issue of “Black
Enterprise.”
Demitri attended the University of Richmond,
Virginia, on an athletic scholarship and graduated
in 1979 with majors in Speech Communications,
Theater Arts, and minored in Sociology. After
supporting his daughter through undergraduate
school (Hampton University) and into Howard
Law and his wife through community college,
undergrad and the successful completion of a
Masters degree in Business Administration from
George Washington University, he is now a graduate
student studying Counseling Psychology at Bowie
State University.
In
the 1970’s, this “Outstanding Young
Man of America” nominee tutored juvenile
offenders at the Virginia Penitentiary in the
city of Richmond, Virginia. In the 1980’s,
this member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.
volunteered his time and services to the Washington
Urban League as an elementary school tutor in
their "Operation Rescue" program in
Washington, D.C. In the 1990’s this winner
of the J. Franklin Bourne Association's prestigious,
"Award for Community Service," was
ordained a Deacon in the Baptist Church and
developed a 14-week, Rites of Passage program
for young men called "Men Under Construction."
In
this, the new century, this “Legacy of
Excellence” award winner from agoodblackman.com
and the “Religious Leader of the Year”
recipient from the Gamma Pi chapter, helped
coach a high school football team from “worst
to first” by winning a State Championship,
mentored elementary school children and wrote
his latest book, “Man Up! – No Excuses
– Do The Work!” . Gamma Pi is Omega
Psi Phi’s graduate chapter in Prince George’s
County, Maryland.
His
latest book is based upon the wisdom he has
received throughout the decades. Now, in yet
another action aimed at “leveling the
playing field,” he shares that wisdom
with the thousands of young men who either don’t
know or barely know their fathers. A gifted
motivational speaker, Demitri is well known
in the Washington D.C. area for the “frank
and to-the-point” messages he has delivered
to high schoolers and church groups alike.
He
has conducted workshops and forums at the Prince
George's County, Maryland, Fatherhood Conference,
the African American Male Empowerment Summit,
African American Women On Tour, and Blacks In
Government (BIG). He has been a Visiting Scholar
at Hampton University, in Hampton Va., Clark
Atlanta University, in Atlanta, Ga. and Washington
College in Chestertown, Md.
